Japan/Finland: SoftBank spends big on mobile gaming market

Japanese tech giant SoftBank Corp. announced plans to acquire a majority stake in the Finland-based mobile games maker Supercell in a deal that values the Finnish company at about $3 billion.

    Reports say SoftBank will split the acquisition bill with subsidiary GungHo Online Entertainment, while SoftBank takes a 51 percent stake in Supercell.

    The buyout marks SoftBank’s first pursuit since its $21.6 billion acquisition of wireless company Sprint Corp. The company, reports say, is now home to Japan’s third-largest market capitalization.

    Supercell develops games for smartphones and tablets; major titles include Clash of Clans and Hay Day, which reached number one in Apple’s App Store.
