Mexico: COFECE greenlights Marriott-Starwood merger

Mexico’s competition regulator COFECE has given the go-ahead on Marriott International Hotels’ acquisition of its rival, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and its 15 properties in Mexico.

    COFECE’s approval brings the $13.6 billion dollar merger one step closer to completion, as the international transaction continues to bring together the two hotel giant’s operations in the United States, Canada, Colombia, India, Pakistan, Taiwan, Turkey, South Africa, Japan, Chile, South Korea and the European Union.

    Both Marriott and Starwood hotels have an important presence in Mexico, requiring the authority’s close review. Marriott operates 40 hotels in 25 cities, while Starwood operates 29 different lodging establishments in 14 cities.
