Mexico: COFECE warns tortilla industry against unjustified price-hikes

 |  January 9, 2018

In response to statements and rumors of a possible increase in the price of tortillas in Mexico, the Federal Commission for Economic Competition (Cofece) urged groups and associations belonging to the dough and tortilla industry to avoid recommending, endorsing or imposing among its members the sales price of this staple product.

Cofece joins the Ministry of Economy (SE), which stated that any unjustified increase could be considered a monopolistic practice, as they would entail agreements between competitors.

Last November, leaders of the dough and tortilla industry, who colluded to fix the price of corn tortillas, from nine to 14 pesos, were sanctioned in the state of Jalisco.

“In a market where price freedom exists, each company or business must decide individually the sale price of its product …”, said the agency.
