Mexico: End of exclusivity deals leads to cleared restaurant acquisition

Mexico-based restaurant operator Alsea has reportedly received clearance to acquire the Vips restaurant chain, owned by Walmex.

    Alsea, which runs various franchises including Starbucks and Domino’s Pizza in Mexico, will acquire 361 restaurants from Walmex in a deal worth more than $630 million. Reports say Mexico’s competition regulator has approved of the transaction after Alsea agreed to provide information to regulators about exclusivity agreements made in malls in which it operates.

    According to reports, Alsea has agreed to cut dozens of exclusivity clauses in its agreements made in those malls.
