Mexico: Telecoms watchdog to probe monopolistic practices

The Federal Telecommunications Institute of Mexico (IFT) has announced a new investigation into possible violations of the country’s competition laws. Specifically, the agency will respond to concerns around possible monopolistic practices in internet access, as well as in the production, distribution and marketing of digital content.

    The investigation stems from a complaint received about the monopolistic practices perceived in markets at the national level, and was announced officially through the country’s Official Federal Gazette.

    “The purpose of the proceeding is to investigate whether or not there are relative monopolistic practices that may have as their object or effect, in the relevant market or in a related market, unduly displacing other economic agents …” said the IFT. The probe may take between 45 days and six months to be concluded.
