Mexico: Left-wing Deputies demand IFT crack down on cell-phone abuses

 |  December 20, 2016

Deputies in Mexico’s lower house of Congress aligned with left-wing party MORENA have called on the country’s communications regulator, IFT, for greater actions in supervising and verifying the application of antitrust laws, with particular attention directed to market leaders Telcel and Móvistar.

Margarita Cuata Dominguez, Deputy for Morena, announced the group has received approval from the Communications Commission to request an official explanation from the IFT over their approval of these companies’ plans to alter their payment schemes, affecting thousands of users.

“Among its obligations, the State must guarantee the right to access information and communication technologies, as well as radio and other broadcast services, including broadband and internet. To do this, it must create the conditions for effective competition in these service sectors” Ms. Cuata Dominguez concluded.
