Mexico’s Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) is set to feel the pinch in next year’s austerity budget, recently announced by the Federal Government. However, IFT officials have been quick to assure the public that the approved budget will be sufficient to see through a series of important projects for 2017.
Gabriel Contreras, IFT’s president, has said the agency will review its processes in order to meet the austerity measures, while highlighting the string of successful actions taken by the IFT in the three years since its formation, and the palpable effects on society. Included in these victories for the regulator are a major reduction in telephone rates and the elimination of long-distance charges, as well as greater competition in the TV and broadcasting sectors.
Mr. Contreras’ remarks were made during a ceremony celebrating the retirement of the “Telecommunications in Mexico” postage stamp, which commemorated three years of the IFT’s creation.
