Mexico: Telco officials eager to speed up TV auction

Mexico’s telecommunications regulator has announced plans to finalize the bidding process for two television network concessions at an earlier date than previously expected, according to reports.

    Tenders for the digital network assets are now set to be complete in the first quarter of next year. The auction aims to boost competition in the industry, and market leaders Grupo Televisa and Azteca are barred from bidding.

    The Federal Telecommunications Institute announced Wednesday that it had also altered some rules to the bidding processing to align with recent legal overhauls passed by Congress.

    Reports say between five and 10 bidders have applied for approval by the regulator to partake in the bidding. The minimum bid is $62 million for each concession.
