Mexico: Telecoms regulator to vote on Slim’s America Movil tariffs

Reuters reports that Mexico’s Federal Institute of Telecommunications’ (IFT) seven commissioners are set to vote on Friday, October 27, on a proposal that would allow sector leader America Movil to charge rivals for calls to its customers.

    In 2014, a reform was passed to loosen Carlos Slim’s grip on a market he has dominated since taking control of former state phone monopoly Telmex in the 1990s.

    In August, the Supreme Court found the market regulator, the IFT, not legislators, should set the so-called interconnection rates.

    America Movil was created by Slim in 2000 and by the end of the year the company already held two thirds of Mexico’s mobile subscriptions.
