Mexico’s Federal Competition Commission has reportedly fined the fixed-line unit of America Movil SAB about $51.6 million for squeezing out competition from its competitor. Telmex has been fined after the CFC found the company deliberately denied competitor Axtel access to its dedicated links, allegedly inhibiting Axtel’s ability to service its customer base. In a statement the authority said that the links are the “backbone” of telecom networks. According to the CFC the abuses occurred from August 2009 to June 2011 in 32 cities as well as six long-distance routes. Telmex is the nation’s market leader in fixed-line phone operation.
