Controversial transport company Uber has commented on the proposal issued by the Mexico City government, which recognises that theirs is an option in terms of public transport that obeys a popular demand and free choice for customers “goes in the right direction, but there are many obstacles left.”
The company’s spokesman went on to say that the proposal contains certain conditions that bring no logical benefit for citizens, with artificial barriers such as a requirement to invest in cars worth a minimum of 200k pesos (around $13,000 US) every five years.
These and other restrictions, the company says, will hamper the growth of a new transit option which already boasts over half a million users. Furthermore, should the proposal be approved as is, it would limit the option of joining the service to a large segment of the population, depriving them of the opportunity to earn a good wage while providing safe transport, the statement said.
Talks with Mexico City Authorities will be ongoing.
