According to The Information, the new setup will combine Anthropic’s systems with OpenAI’s across Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Developers testing the Office features reportedly found that Anthropic’s latest models were better at handling specialized tasks, such as executing financial functions in Excel and building presentation slides in PowerPoint.

Per The Information, Microsoft’s Office 365 Copilot will now run partly on Anthropic’s models. Sources told the outlet that Microsoft determined Anthropic’s tools were more effective than OpenAI’s when it came to spreadsheet automation and presentation generation.

The payment for Anthropic’s technology will be processed through Amazon Web Services, The Information reported. A source added that Microsoft is expected to announce the change in the coming weeks. Despite the shift, OpenAI’s models will remain in use for some Office 365 AI capabilities.

“As we’ve said, OpenAI will continue to be our partner on frontier models and we remain committed to our long-term partnership,” a Microsoft spokesperson said.
