Namibia: Mobile sector poised for new competition

Telecom is gearing up to fight its next-biggest rival MTC as Telecom is ready to finalize its deal to takeover Leo, whose financial issues have become destructive to the telecom company. MTC has responded to the deal by arguing that Telecom’s push into the wireless mobile market will bring unfair competition because Telecom is not a mobile telecom company. MTC was the first mobile communications operator in the nation and has received a license to compete with Telecom once the deal is signed. The deal is, however, still subject to review by the Namibian Competition Commission; both companies are owned by the government through the Namibia Post and Telecom Holdings.
