Nepal: Authorities look to expand mobile telecom market competition

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority is reportedly considering plans to issue a third mobile license to another operator in the nation in order to boost competition in the market. The NTA’s new chairman Digambar Jha has said that the market is imbalanced due to the apparent deterioration of Nepal Telecom; Jha has said he is concerned that Spice Nepal has grown without competition and must therefore be faced with a new rival. Nepal has three rural telecoms operators that may be awarded the GSM license; sources say Smart Telecom or United telecom Limited may have already applied for the licenses.
