Norway: Global airline workers groups fight Norwegian Air permit

Groups of airline workers around the globe are reportedly petitioning the US Department of Transportation to deny Norwegian Air International a foreign air carrier permit, arguing the company’s efforts to enter the US airline market would harm competition and promote unfair labor practices.

The globe’s largest flight attendant union, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, along with the European Transport Workers’ Federation and the International Transport Workers’ Federation, are calling the DOT to deny NAI’s permit. Reports say the Norwegian company is looking to circumvent international labor laws.

According to the ETF, Norwegian Air is looking to obtain cheaper labor from Asia; the group called Norwegian Air’s efforts “social dumping.”

Not only would the airline’s practices harm international labor standards, the group say, but it would also harm competition between airlines by giving Norwegian Air an unfair financial advantage.
