Orrick and Buckley to Merge DC Offices in Q1 2024

 |  October 29, 2023

In a strategic move following their merger last year, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and Buckley law firms are set to combine their Washington, D.C. offices in the first quarter of 2024. The joint entity, which now boasts approximately 1,000 lawyers and a gross revenue of nearly $1.5 billion, will make its new home in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood, specifically at 2100 Pennsylvania Ave, reported Bloomberg.

A representative for the firms has confirmed that they are actively seeking a sublease tenant to occupy Buckley’s nearby office space on M Street, which is part of the consolidation plan. Additionally, the lease for Orrick’s downtown office on 15th Street is set to expire, further necessitating this move.

Orrick, originally founded in San Francisco, and Washington-based Buckley completed their merger in February, which has enabled them to join the ranks of the world’s largest law firms in terms of gross revenue.

This decision comes amidst a trend in the legal industry, where law firms are increasingly looking for ways to optimize their operations and reduce costs. Orrick had previously announced layoffs and delayed start dates for new associates earlier this year as part of their cost-cutting measures. Similarly, in October, partners at Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling voted to combine, forming the formidable A&O Shearman entity, further emphasizing the ongoing evolution and consolidation within the legal sector.
