Pakistan: Government allegedly involved in price-fixing cover-up

Allegations have emerged that the government was involved in a cover-up concerning price-fixing by cement manufacturers. Documents acquired by the media have suggested that the government, lead by the Pakistan Peoples Party, shunned a request to investigate the cement industry made to the Competition Commission of Pakistan by the Ministry of Industries. According to reports, the Ministry of Industries withdrew the call to action once the Ministry realized the sector’s secretary is also the top politician within the Ministry. Allegations accused manufacturers of raising prices between 2011 and 2012.
