Pakistan: Oil regulators questioned over new entrant exclusion

The Competition Commission of Pakistan issued an official letter to major government oil regulators questioning their practices of how they exclude potential new entrants into the oil market, say reports.

    The CCP sent the letter to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority as well as the Petroleum Ministry over the bodies’ practices of issuing licenses to just two state-owned utilities.

    The companies, the Sui Southern Gas Company and the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, are the only two companies operating in the nation’s distribution and transmission sector. Reports say their exclusivity periods for operating in that market expired in 2003 and 2010 for the two firms.

    Reports say the CCP sent the letter last July questioning the maintenance of such a monopoly.
