Peruvian competition authorities have begun the process to sanction six shipping companies accused of collusion and price-fixing in the maritime transport of rolling stock. Among the companies involved are Chilean shippers Compañía Marítima Chilena SA and Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores SA, giving a bi-national twist to the case.
The agreement between these companies is thought to have been put in place between 2001 and 2012 and entailed the sharing of accounts and a coordinated increase in prices, which would have affected Peruvian ports until 2015. Prices in the transportation of rolling stock would have been directly affected, causing spike in the price of automobiles both in Peru and across the region.
Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores, which was linked to the Luksic group, said that the company would apply to Peru’s recent leniency laws, citing “the collaboration provided by the company in other jurisdictions, where the case has been closed, after agreement with the respective authorities.”
