Philippines: Government, businesses support pending antitrust legislation

Government officials and business groups offered support for pending antitrust legislation, describing the bills as long overdue to curb anticompetitive behavior in the Philippines, say reports.

    Several bills are pending in Congress as the House committees on economic affairs and trade have begun to deliberate on the legislation. Reports say there does not appear to be much resistance to the proposed laws, especially with the incoming economic integration of Southeast Asian nations by 2015.

    The laws will aim to prohibit abuse of market dominance and curb excessive market concentration.
