Pioneer-Pannar seed producer merger approved by court

South Africa’s Competition Appeal Court has approved a merger between Pioneer Hi-Bred International and Pannar Seed. Pioneer is a U.S. subsidiary of DuPont; Pannar is a South African seed company. By approving the merger, the court overturned rulings by the Competition Commission and Competition Tribunal. Both bodies had found that the merger would diminish competition in the South African seed market, as the merging parties comprise two of the three seed producers in the area.

The court placed conditions on its approval that have not yet been disclosed. Other African countries, such as Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zambia have already approved the deal.
