Russia: Antitrust authority to stand against Tele2 merger

Russia’s antimonopoly regulator has stated that it would not agree to a potential merger that would see Tele2 Russia being absorbed by one of the “Big 3” telecommunications operators in the nation. The Anti-Monopoly Service denounced the possibility of Tele2 being merged with either Mobile TeleSystems, VimpelCom Ltd. or MegaFon, which dominate the market. The authority, however, did note that it would review the plan to accurately assess the effects such a deal would make on the market, and insisted it would review all applications submitted to purchase the company.
