South Africa: Car parts industry blames foreign rivals for price-fixing

Just days after South African officials announced an investigation into claims of auto parts price-fixing, reports say the domestic market is blaming foreign rivals for the anticompetitive behavior.

    Components maker Naacam and carmaker group Naamsa responded to the Competition Commission’s announcement earlier this week of a price-fixing investigation, saying they were surprised at the allegations, and pointed out that nearly all of the 81 companies being probed are foreign firms “as opposed to locally manufactured and supplied components.”

    The Commission is also investigating companies like Mitsubishi and Panasonic following claims of price manipulation dating as far back as 2000.
