South Africa: Communications probe trails wireless merger announcement

 |  March 12, 2014

Only days after wireless rivals MTN and Telkom signed a network sharing agreement, reports say the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa announced plans to launch a “high-level inquiry” into the communications technology market.

Reports say the authority will also look at the effects of market consolidation.

Wireless competitors MTN and Telkom recently agreed to allow each other to use their networks for roaming purposes, though the companies did not say whether an agreement was made to use each others’ spectrum.
