South Africa: Ex construction exec claims firm knew of collusion

An ex-executive at Murray & Roberts told a conference late last week that the company likely knew of the collusion in which it was participating.

Former M&R director Millard Arnold told the conference that “in some form, some of the directors on the Murray & Roberts board must have known what their subsidiaries – and colleagues – were doing.”

M&R, along with other construction firms, were accused of a massive scandal, forming a cartel to fix government construction contracts worth millions. The contracts included World Cup stadium projects. The South African Competition Commission probed the companies and found evidence of the collusion and subsequently fined the companies.

Arnold, who was on the board from 2001 to 2011, told the conference that the company had never discussed any cartel behavior.
