South Africa: Regulators announce terms of healthcare inquiry

South Africa’s Competition Commission announced detailed plans for its inquiry into the nation’s private healthcare industry, setting a timetable of nearly three years to complete the review.

The market inquiry is set to begin January 6 of next year.

Regulators first planned to look into the industry following findings that the majority of South Africans cannot afford private healthcare, leaving them dependent on public services. According to the Commission’s terms of reference document, private healthcare costs are above inflation.
