South Africa: SABMiller liberated from seven-year probe

Global brewing conglomerate SABMiller will not face sanctions in South Africa after the nation’s Competition Tribunal announced Monday that it has dismissed a seven-year case against the firm.

    SABMiller, which controls about 90 percent of the nation’s beer industry, was accused of making anticompetitive agreements with its distributors that hampered competition between rival distributors. Specifically, the company’s offer of discounts with distributing partners was in question by the Competition Commission.

    But the Tribunal said this week that there was insufficient evidence against the UK-headquartered company, ruling that “the appointed distributors were not sufficiently autonomous to be considered competitors with one another.”
