Spain: Basketball Association ready to fight €400k euro sanction

Spain’s ACB (Basketball Club Association) has been fined by the country’s competition authority, the CNMC, for a total of €400,000 euros over a major violation of competition regulations. The sports group has been accused of blocking the entrance of new clubs to the professional leagues, with ACB spokesmen saying denying the claims and vowing to fight the CNMC’s fine, which they say violates the right of professional leagues to self-organization as enshrined in the Treaty of the European Union.

    ACB member directives will gather Tuesday to discuss the issue. Should they move to appeal the decision, the case would be filed until it can be reviewed by the National Assembly, which holds the final decision.

    The ACB has also requested the regulator to clarify several legal aspects of their decision, which was given in response to complaints made in 2015 by the Tizonia Basketball Club.
