Spain: Political turmoil will affect CNMC renewal

The president of the National Commission of Markets and Competition of Spain (CNMC), José María Marín Quemada, who will complete six years in front of the regulator, along with the CNMC’s vice president, María Fernández, and three other directors could see their periods in front of the regulatory body expanded due to the political stalemate that the country is experiencing.
The law that created the agency, which brings together the former industry and competition regulators, began in 2013 under a Partido Popular (PP) government, establishing mandates for “six non-renewable years,” however, as no replacement will likely be ready before this deadline is met, the members will continue to perform their duties until a successor can be chosen for each of the positions.

    The renewal of the Council becomes the first major series of appointments that would be blocked by the situation of political stalematein the country, which continues to act under an Acting Government, which by law must limit its actions to the management of ordinary public affairs, without taking other measures, including the appointment of political and regulatory positions.
