Spain: Renfe to face ‘total’ competition in passenger transport

 |  January 16, 2018

Renfe, the Spanish national railways and passenger trains operator, will face ‘total’ competition in passenger transport starting in 2020. From this date, any private operator will be able to enter to operate in any of the country’s railway lines.

The Spanish government has agreed to liberalize the sector by this date, set by the EU, although a few years ago the possibility was considered of gradually opening the sector, as was recalled by the president of Renfe, Juan Alfaro during his speech at the IV Tourism Innovation Forum ‘Hotusa Explora.

Alfaro said that the liberalization of passenger transport is the current challenge for the operator. “It is our main focus until 2020, to maintain market share and prepare for such an opening,” he said.
