Sweden/Netherlands: Oil product merger would eliminate competition, says EU

The European Commission has reportedly launched an investigation into the acquisition of a Netherlands naphthenic base oil company by a rival Swedish company, sparked from the realization that the transaction would eliminate all competition in the market. Joaquin Almunia said in a statement that Sweden-based Nynas AB has proposed to buy out a Dutch-based Royal Dutch Shell refinery. The companies produce oil that is used for making industrial grease, ink and adhesive, among other products. Almunia stated that the Commission will review the case to ensure that prices for consumers are not unjustly increased.
