Texas Attorney General Launches Antitrust Probe into Youth Hockey Operations

The Texas Attorney General’s Office has opened an antitrust investigation into alleged anticompetitive practices within the state’s youth hockey system, USA Today reported. The inquiry centers on the Dallas Stars, the $2 billion National Hockey League franchise that has gained significant control over amateur hockey in Texas.

    According to USA Today, the state’s antitrust division is in the preliminary, information-gathering stage of its probe. The investigation follows an earlier USA Today report published in August, which detailed how the Dallas Stars organization consolidated authority over nearly every level of amateur hockey—from beginner programs to adult leagues—across Texas.

    Per USA Today, the investigation will examine whether the team’s control of youth leagues and tournaments has limited competition or disadvantaged independent programs. The findings from the earlier report raised concerns among parents, coaches, and local organizers about the lack of choice and rising costs in the sport.

    “The Dallas Stars have not been contacted by the Texas Attorney General’s office,” Joe Calvillo, the team’s director of communications, said in an emailed statement to USA Today. “The Dallas Stars are committed to providing the best possible experience for all players, teams and families who participate in our leagues and tournaments through long-standing partnerships with cities across the DFW Metroplex.”

    While the investigation remains in its early stages, the state’s scrutiny marks a significant development in how professional sports franchises interact with youth athletics programs. According to USA Today, the outcome could influence the structure and oversight of amateur sports organizations not only in Texas but potentially across the country.
