Thailand: Public concerned over digital TV monopolies

According to reports, Thailand is now facing growing concern that its National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has been preserving a monopoly as the Commission gears up to lend out digital TV licenses. Both analysts and consumer groups have voiced concern over how the telecommunications authority approves of those licenses, noting that if licenses are awarded based on the highest bid, the industry will remain in the hands of telecom giants. The Commission has recently launched a campaign for “absolute free and fair competition” within the sector and has also released a statement saying the regulator is in the works of regulation that would limit channels per bidder.
