U.K.: Electrical equipment recycling scheme accused of cartel participation

 |  December 5, 2012

The Office of Fair Trading has been asked by Mercury Recycling Ltd to investigate recycling firm Recolight, self-described as the U.K.’s “specialist WEEE lamp compliance scheme” on its website. WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Specifically, Mercury says that the company has been forced to cut jobs because it is “uneconomic” to take part in trading in the lamp recycling sector. Concerns have already been raised in the House of Commons over suspicions that four founder companies of Recolight were operating a cartel in the electrical equipment recycling sector. Those concerns, announced by Kate Green, include emphasis that a cartel amongst the four companies would put independent recycling companies at a disadvantage. Recolight has denied these claims and says it is in full compliance with current legislation.
