The Competition and Markets Authority said in a statement this afternoon that it would probe the merger between Poundland and rival 99p. The decision comes after the watchdog last week said that it would refer the tie-up for a full investigation unless the companies offered undertakings to address the CMA’s concerns.

“As the parties have not offered any undertakings, the CMA will now start an in-depth merger investigation to decide whether the merger raises substantial competition problems that need to be remedied,” the CMA said in the statement, adding that a decision was due by October 2.
