UK: Divisive CMA ruling on hospital sales irks HCA, delights BMI

Healthcare group HCA International is reportedly gearing up for a yearlong appeals process that will cost more than $3 million to fight the Competition and Markets Authority’s ruling that will require the company to divest hospitals.

The CMA released its first report this week just one day after commencing operations as the UK’s new competition regulator. The CMA ordered HCA to divest at least one of its six hospitals in London, reports say, but decided against ordering market leader BMI to divest assets.

HCA said it is “furious” with the CMA’s decision to only order such divestitures on the US-based conglomerate and no one else. BMI was originally slated to require the sale of seven hospitals.
