The appointment for Groceries Code Adjudicator – a position that will be officially created with Parliament’s passing of the Groceries Code Adjudicator Bill later this year – has been announced. Christine Tacon, who has been the head of the Co-operative Group’s farming sector for the last 11 years, will fill the position that was suggested by the Competition Commission in 2008. As ombudsman, Tacon will have the power to fine supermarkets abusing competition law. In a statement, Tacon says that the position of representing direct suppliers is “quite a big responsibility.” The new legislation is the result of a two-year review of the supermarket sector by the Competition Commission, which found that exclusivity agreements between supermarkets and suppliers must be rangled.
