US: American, US merger to harm competition, says consumer watchdog

Consumer watchdog the Government Accountability Office has warned the US Senate that the proposed merger between American and US Airways will harm airline competition. According to reports, the GAO claims 1,665 flight routes will be negatively affected by the transaction, a figure that effects 53 million flight passengers. The companies have only cited 12 destinations in which the airlines overlap routes; the watchdog claims that double that number are subject to limited competition. The remarks were made at a Senate hearing on Wednesday. The parties remain waiting for regulatory approval of the merger, which would create the world’s largest airline.
