US: Delrahim on Antitrust on AT&T-Time Warner: “David beat Goliath for a reason”
One of the top government challengers to AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner said he’s not concerned about taking on the Dallas telecom in an upcoming antitrust fight.
Makan Delrahim, the head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division, told European antitrust officials he’s confident the U.S. government will prevail in blocking the merger, which would turn the large telecom into a media and entertainment giant. The trial is scheduled to begin March 19.
“We are 30 lawyers against 700, but as myrabbi used to say, David beat Goliath for a reason, because he was right,” he told the group of antitrust practitioners.
CNBC first reported Delrahim’s remarks, which were made during a trip to Europe to meet with antitrust officials. “In the U.S., we now have thousands of vertical merger experts, who somehow think we haven’t enforced anything in 50 years,” Delrahim told the audience.
