US: CBS merger with Viacom is back in the picture

On-off talks between CBS and Viacom about a US$38 billion merger appear to be back on again, according to Variety.

    The chief executives of the companies met this month to discuss a deal that will now be considered by their boards, it is understood.

    CBS, which is worth about US$24 billion, and Viacom, valued at about US$14 billion, are two of America’s largest television companies. They are owned by National Amusements, a holding company controlled by the Redstone family.

    According to Variety Media, reports earlier this month said that the Redstone family was poised to nudge the two companies into merger discussions raised some hackles at both companies. But after the emotions settled, the positive attributes of a reunified company are said to have become clearer for both camps.
