US: Comcast ghostwrote letters to FCC in support of TWC deal

A report today by The Verge, based on documents obtained through public records requests, shows that letters sent in August to the Federal Communications Commission by three lawmakers were actually ghostwritten by Comcast. 

The FCC is charged with deciding whether or not to approve the proposed $38 billion merger between two cable conglomerates, Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

Ever since the Comcast and TWC merger was announced it has been surrounded by controversy. Critics say that this merger is going to create a monopoly which will not be beneficial for consumers.

State executives who have voiced support for Comcast include the governors of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Hawaii, Colorado, Maryland and Vermont. Many major city mayors have also filed comments, including Rahm Emanuel of Chicago and Michael Nutter of Philadelphia.

It is unclear whether the reported revelations about Comcast’s ghostwriting will affect the FCC’s decision on the deal.
