The US Senate has confirmed Terrell McSweeny as the newest member of the Federal Trade Commission, filling a longstanding vacancy within the agency and restoring its Democratic majority that will allow chairwoman Edith Ramirez to form a coalition with her party in FTC decisions.
Reports say the Senate voted 95-1 to approve of McSweeny’s nomination to fill the vacancy left by former chairman Jon Leibowitz when he stepped down last year. She was nominated by the Obama administration last year.
With a 3-2 Democratic majority within FTC members, McSweeny could help end what some critics say was a period of inefficient enforcement for the FTC hampered by a 2-2 split between Democrats and Republicans at the agency.
According to reports, McSweeny is currently a senior staffer in the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice.
