US: FTC pushes health IT merger forward

 |  September 21, 2014

The US Federal Trade Commission has reportedly approved for Cerner Corporation to acquire Siemens Health Services in a $1.3 billion transaction.

With the FTC’s approval, the companies say they remain on-track to close the deal early next year.

In a statement, Cerner said it is “pleased” with the FTC’s early termination of the necessary waiting period to review the deal.

The deal was announce earlier this year as Cerner confirmed that two factors – interoperability and population health – were driving the companies towards a merger.

Reports say the merger will also allow Cerner to more aggressively compete with its top rival, Epic Systems.
