Internet operators have reportedly asked the US Federal Communications Commission to crack down on what they consider to be excessive fees for interconnectivity.
Operators Level 3 and Cogent Communications called upon the FCC to take a look at interconnections policies for deals struck between Internet service providers after the FCC failed to implement any such policies when creating net neutrality rules.
The FCC’s proposed net neutrality rules included policies for ISPs including Comcast and Verizon to treat all services equally once traffic enters their network. But those rules do not apply for ISPs and internet transit providers such as Level 3 and Cogent, reports say.
Now, as authorities take another look at net neutrality rules after a court struck down the FCC’s first proposals, network operators are accusing providers of abusing their dominant power. Level 3 and Cogent have been joined by Netflix in fighting for rules on how much the ISPs can charge the operators for the interconnections; Netflix argued for those rules while Level 3 and Cogent filed comments on the issue with the FCC last Friday.
