US: ITC launches probe into Nintendo, Samsung for patent infringement

 |  October 22, 2013

A complaint lodged with the US International Trade Commission has sparked an investigation into Asian makers of optical disc drives, a major component of technological devices including DVD and DC players, consul gaming systems and others, say reports.

US-based Optical Devices LLC lodged a complaint with the ICD accusing various optical device makers of infringing on Optical Devices patents. The accused include Nintendo, Panasonic, Samsung, LD, Toshiba and others, as well as their US-based entities.

Optical Devices is now requesting the ITC to issue a limited exclusion order and cease and desist orders against those companies’ products.

The ITC has now opened an investigation into the matter.

Such legal disputes are gaining traction within antitrust community debates as to their effects on competition and innovation.
