US/Mexico: Bad news for angry beer consumers

A US district judge has sided with the world’s largest beer brewing company in refusing to block its acquisition of a Mexico-based rival. According to reports, US District Judge Maxine Chesney has denied a request filed by a group of nine consumers who sued beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev NV for its buyout of Grupo Modelo SAB to block to the deal. The plaintiffs sued to have the acquisition stopped over concerns it would lead to higher beer prices; AB InBev owns the Budweiser brand and has already agreed to divest Modelo’s ownership of their joint distribution venture; Constellation Brands Inc. will buy up the divesture for $1.85 billion. According to Judge Chesney, blocking the deal would be “difficult and awkward” considering how far along it has come.
