US: Settlement reached in iron pipe consolidation case

The Federal Trade Commission has settled with one of the leading manufacturers of cast iron pipes, ending a years-long case over concerns of the company’s market power. The FTC recently settled with Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Co., which agreed to notify the FTC before any future acquisitions and to enter into a non-compete agreement with former rival Star Pipe Products Inc. Charlotte Pipe bought a portion of Star Pipe for $19 million in 2010. The FTC found that in addition to that deal, Charlotte Pipe made at least three similar acquisitions since 2002.
