2022 Asia Pacific

Winter 2022, Asia Pacific Special Edition

2021 Asia Pacific

Towards a Competition Enabling Framework in Asia Pacific The Asia Pacific region – broadly defined – is key to the global economy. Global supply chains depend critically on the economic functioning of this part of the world. In its broad definition, “Asia-Pacific” includes South, East, and Southeast Asia, as well as Oceania. An understanding of this region is essential to any global understanding of antitrust. The articles in this Chronicle include contributions from the entire Pacific rim. The topics covered range from the regulation of digital advertising in Japan, to the development of the mobile app ecosystem in India, to the controversy concerning online news in Australia.

2020 House Report

U.S. House Report on Digital Markets The U.S. House Judiciary Committee’s Report on Digital Markets represents a landmark in the latest round of efforts to subject the “big tech” companies to antitrust scrutiny. The Report, clocking in at over 400 pages, and published after a thorough set of hearings, sets out detailed concerns primarily with respect to the conduct of Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon, all of whom are alleged to operate dominant “platform” businesses. Significantly, the report was also issued in the context of various investigations by Federal, state, and international agencies into these companies’ conduct. Its political salience can therefore scarcely be underestimated.

2019 Digital Economy

The Digital Economy - 2019 Highlights Special Edition 2019 was, by any definition, a landmark year for international antitrust enforcement in the digital economy. CPI published numerous articles on this subject during this critical year. These articles relate not only to ongoing enforcement activity and case law, but also touch on the studies and reports that regulators have commissioned this year to address the question of how to frame and conceptualize competition enforcement in this crucial sector. Over the past year, we have published contributions from notable scholars, regulators, and practitioners who specialize in this industry, across the world. This special edition of the CPI Antitrust Chronicle recaps these valuable contributions, and in addition publishes an interview with Mr. Joseph Simons, the chair of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, who, like our other contributors, is at the coalface of this vital frontier for antitrust enforcement. This issue recaps developments from 2019, but the digital economy is here to stay. As practitioners, regulators and academics from around the world grapple with this challenge, CPI will continue to provide our readers with a comprehensive, balanced perspective on the evolution of law and practice.
