Spain: Agreement between media giants faces probe

Spain’s National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) is investigating the advertising agreement announced a month ago by Mediaset and Gol, Mediapro’s free-to-air DTT network, which has been heavily criticized by other players in the TV sector.

    The CNMC is “on the issue”, but it is still very early to know if progress will be made towards a formal filing of charges. Last week, the CNMC requested the channel hand over all the documentation regarding the agreement, after having met with the Mediaset corporate team.

    Some elements of the agreement have caused concern among regulators and competitors. Among these is Mediaset’s attempt to sell marketing content for another channel while itself controlling more than 40% of the market, which encourages concentration in advertising.
