UK Fashion Giants Commit to Honest Environmental Claims

 |  March 27, 2024

Leading UK fashion retailers ASOS, Boohoo, and Asda have pledged to ensure their environmental claims are transparent and accurate, following an intervention by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The commitment comes after the CMA’s scrutiny into the fast fashion industry’s “green” claims, aiming to eliminate misleading information and promote genuine sustainability efforts. This initiative is part of the CMA’s broader examination of environmental claims across various sectors, sparked by growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and the urgent need for climate action.

Under the agreement, the three retail giants have vowed to conduct thorough reviews of their green claims, ensuring they adhere to legal standards. This includes claims about products being “eco-friendly” or having a reduced environmental impact. The retailers have agreed to make any necessary changes by the end of 2024, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and consumer trust.

Sarah Cardell, the Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “People who want to ‘buy green’ should be able to do so confident that they aren’t being misled.” She highlighted the role of accurate information in empowering consumers to make environmentally friendly choices, thereby contributing to the broader fight against climate change.

This initiative by the CMA and the subsequent pledge by ASOS, Boohoo, and Asda mark a pivotal moment in the fashion industry’s journey towards sustainability. It underscores the growing recognition of the need for transparency in environmental claims and the vital role of regulatory bodies in ensuring that companies adhere to their commitments.
